With me being Asian, I was worried about giving an overly strong image of the Orient. Instead, I wrote the “vera” (meaning “villa”) in my address in extra-large letters. I put the paper in an envelope and, when I came to address it, I took out the address she had given me. Tracing her roundish letters, I repeated her name in my mind, over and over, until I had completed the address.

Although I’d heard that Renée was coming back at the weekend, I didn’t know exactly when. I’d been invited to a friend’s house that Friday night. However, because I was worried she might choose that evening to call, I changed the appointment and met my friend for lunch. Still, I wasn’t sure if she’d call or not, so I couldn’t just sit there in vain. I turned on the TV and began to watch a movie—in which I was soon engrossed—when suddenly the phone started to ring.

I instinctively grabbed the receiver. The voice on the other end, which was barely audible, was soft, high-pitched and rather hoarse. I couldn’t make out what the person was saying—the movie on TV was reaching its climax—and I had to ask again and again.

“It’s Renée, Renée, in Sanchey. A friend and I met you the other day.” Ah, I thought, and, wondering how she could have escaped my thoughts, said hastily, “Thank you for calling. Did you get my letter?”

“I just got home. I asked my friends, but they don’t want to go, so if next week is OK….” But again, someone on the TV was shouting, and, because the movie was coming to an end, this was overlaid with bursts of music.

私が東洋人であるのを思い、あまりに東洋的イメージが強くなり過ぎるかとおそれたのです。その代わり、住所にある〝ヴェラ〝（別荘という意味）という言葉を大きく書きました。それを封筒に入れ、その表書きをする時、彼女の書いた住所をとり出しました。その丸っぽい字をなぞり、何度も何度も、彼女の名前を心の中でくり返しながら書きました。

彼女の帰ってくるのは週末とはききましたが、いつのことなのかとよくわかりません。金曜の夜、友達の家に呼ばれていました。しかし、もしかしたら、その夜に電話があるのではないかと案じ、昼にかえてもらいました。しかし、果たしてあるかどうかもわからない電話を、むなしく待つわけにもいきません。テレビのスイッチを入れ、映画をみはじめました．．．．．．ほどなくその中に引き込まれていきました．．．．．．突然電話のベルが鳴りました。

反射的に受話器をとると、小さな、少しかすれて高い、あまり聞きなれぬ声です。何を言っているのかわかりません­­―­―ブラウン管では、映画のクライマックスにさしかかっています―­―何度もきき返すと、

「ルネ、ルネ、サンシェで、この間友達と会った．．．．．．」あっと思って、何故念頭から去っていたのかといぶかりながら、「電話してくれてありがとう。手紙ついた？」と、あわててそう言いました。

「今、帰ってきてところ。友達にきいてみたら、一緒に行きたくないというので、もしよければ来週に．．．．．．」テレビからまた大きな人の叫び声と、それと重なる様に、ラスト・シーンなのか、たっぷりとした音楽の束があふれてきました。

She’s probably wary of people knowing where she lives, I thought.

And then suddenly I saw the Dutch girl pick up the red address book she had on her lap and hand it in my direction. It was the same book she had previously passed to the Korean girl–small, quite worn, with a faint smell of her hands. “Write your address in here,” she said, inserting her finger into the book. Each page was marked with thinly-spaced lines. With some embarrassment, I wrote my address on one of these lines. My apartment was called “Vera Elrange.” However, I noticed when I’d finished writing that I’d left that out, so I added it immediately below. It was the most appealing part of my address.

I returned her address book. Tilting her head slightly, she looked at it, gave me a brief smile, and then placed it in her bag. Reacting automatically, I took a sheet of paper from my bag and passed it to her. Again, she tilted her head and slowly began to write out her address. When she returned the piece of paper, I found she had written her address in one corner in small round letters. It was then that I first learned her name—Renée Hartevelt.

Below her address was written “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.”

“What’s this?” I asked,

“The days and times it’s OK to phone,” she replied.

ふと、隣の彼女をみると、ひざにのせていた赤い手帳を手にとり、それから私の方にそれを差し出しました。それは先程、韓国人の女の子に渡していたものです。小さな、かなり使い込んだ、ほのかに彼女の手の匂いのする様なその手帳の間に指を入れて、「ここの書いて」と言いました。みると、細い線がぎっしりと並んでいます。その小さなスペースに、私は少しどぎまぎしながら、自分の住所を書きこみました。私のアパートの建物には、ヴィラ・エルランジュという名前がついていましたが、それを書きおとし、書きおわってからそれに気づいて、住所の一番下に書き加えました。それは、私の住所の中で、一番美しい名前でした。

手帳をかえすと、首をやや傾げてそれをみてから、私に軽くほほえみ、バッグにしまいました。私は反射的に、かばんからタイプ用紙を取り出して、彼女に渡しました。彼女はまた、首を傾げながら、かなり時間をかけて自分の住所を書いていました。それを受け取ると、タイプ用紙の隅に、まるい小さな字がおさまっていました。

その時私ははじめて「ルネ・ハルテヴェルト」という、彼女の名を知ったのです。

住所の下には、月曜、火曜、水曜という文字と、午前八時から午後一時まで、という数字がみえます。

｢これ、何？｣ときくと、

「電話していい時間と日のこと」と言います。
