I looked down and, in a low voice, said,

“Well, how about telling me whatever you can about your thoughts—about how you feel? I know I’m just a magazine reporter, but I’ve always been accountable for what I write, and if there’s anything you want me to leave out, I can be discreet. Our conversations here will remain confidential and you will have full control over what goes into print. What do you think? Do you agree?”

He didn’t move, but breathed in slightly, then said softly, “I have done nothing that I believe should be hidden from public. You can write whatever you like. However, please write it exactly the way I tell it.”

“Of course,” I said. “That goes without saying.”

For a while he sat staring at the ground. When he raised his head, his gaze moved to the picture of the girl on the wall in front of him. A moment passed, and his thoughts seemed to move beyond the picture, far beyond. Then, in a slightly trembling voice, he began.

「それは無論です。」

しばらく彼は下を向いて黙っていましたが、やがて顔を上げると、目の前の、彼女の像を、じっと見つめていました。その視線が、やがて、その像を超えて、彼方を見つめる様なまなざしにかわると、軽くふるえる様な声で話しはじめました。

I could not find any evidence that 希み exists as a word. I could not find this in Nelson, the ALC online dictionary or my Sharp edictionary. There are other such examples in this book. They could be mistakes on the part of the author, archaic or alternative readings that are no longer used, or deliberate literary ploys to evoke certain emotions in the reader. Please leave a comment if you know what the reading is.

Regardless, I continued,

“Both here in France and in Japan, everyone’s trying to work you out. Nothing like this has ever happened before.”

“Psychiatrists are saying all sorts of things. And so are the newspapers.”

“What do you yourself think?”

“About what?”

“I mean, there are all these different theories about why you did it, and everyone’s talking about what you’re really like, although no one really knows…”

“Do you know yourself why you did it?”

“Not really… It’s very difficult to explain. I mean, if I did know, then I probably wouldn’t have done it.”

“You could be right.”

“But then again, I have these very strong feelings about why I can’t understand the feelings I have. And that really bothers me…”

“Huh?” He had lost me. But at the same time I felt I had discovered some secret deep within him. I looked at him. He had been staring at the ground as he spoke, but he suddenly raised his eyes to mine and looked me hard in the face.

「ほお．．．．．．？」と私ははじめて、彼の心の奥の秘密につきあたった様な気がして彼の顔をみました。彼はその時下を向いていましたが，いきなりこちらに向き直って、目の奥底までのぞき込むように、私をみました。

With this a smile spread across his face, and for the first time I saw in his eyes a very different person. I suddenly saw him as something resembling a spiteful child.

I remembered what some of his former friends had told me before coming here.

Concerned that I might also fall into this “trap,” I said, “You probably know already, but I’ve been sent over here by a magazine in Japan. I was told to find out about your case.” Again I laughed, but this time the laughter somehow remained in the back of my throat.

“I don’t know if you’ve heard, but apparently the prime minister, who’s currently here in Europe, has heard about it, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has even rushed out a report.”

“I did read something about it in one of the local papers,” he said softly.

“I seemed to have caused a lot of trouble…”

“Still,” he added with a titter that faded into a sneer, “I don’t know what everyone’s making such a fuss about.” The sneer seemed to have been there all along. I suddenly glimpsed a hidden audacity within this shy young man, and inside of me I felt a slight unpleasantness taking hold.

私がここにくる前に、何人かの彼の友達だったという人の話を思い出していました。つきあっていると彼にはどこか、支えずにはいられない様なところがあったというのです。それがあるいは、彼らの心をつなぎとめていた一つの大きな原因だったのかも知れません。私も、その“わな”にはまりそうになる自分を感じながら、

「既におききおよびと思いますが、私は日本のある出版社から派遣されてきた雑誌記者です。あなたのことを取材してこいというのが命令でしてね」と、ふたたび笑おうとしましたが、何故かそのまま笑いがのどの奥にひっこんでしまうのを感じました。

「御存じでしょうか？　ヨーロッパ訪問の途上にある首相の耳にまで、わざわざこれに関して、日本の外務省から報告が飛んだということですよ」

「少しフランスの新聞で読みました」彼は静かにそう答えて、

「皆さんに、大変な御迷惑をかけてしまって．．．．．．」といいかけ、

「しかし、こんな大騒ぎになるとは．．．．．．」と、急に笑い声をたてて、たまらなくなった様に、苦笑とも皮肉ともとれる笑顔をつくりました。私はそこに、このもの静かな青年の奥に秘む不敵さを垣間見た様で、少々不愉快な気分が、胸をよぎりました。

The red sentence indicated by ??????? in the English is my second problem. The narrator is talking about a character flaw of Sagawa that former friends commented on. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

秘む is an uncommon reading and I had trouble finding it. My Sharp edictionary describes ひむ (and ひめる) as meaning “かくす。人にわからないようにかくす。”

As a sometime documentarist, I became involved in this case when it was still in the news.

On a rather cold, early summer morning, I decided to travel out to the southeast of Paris to visit him in his solitary cell.

Once inside the old brick prison, I was placed in the charge of a tall warden. I followed him as he turned left, then right, then up one set of steps, and then another, until we reached the third floor, an area of cream-white walls and metal grills. When we finally stopped, it was outside a small door in one corner of the building. Over the door, in faded blue paint, was the number 43.

The warden pulled opened the door, sending an echo booming through the building, and ushered me in.

Inside was a narrow room with a bed fastened to the wall. Sagawa sat on the bed, perched, facing us. There was a window immediately behind him, and the light streaming in threw his face into shadow. However, I could see that he looked at me with some surprise. Slowly a smile spread across his face, and he nodded a slight bow.

His head was large—it was the only part of him that was. I guessed him to be in his thirties. He gave the impression of someone who shunned friendship, and in his eyes I could see timidness. Putting aside these first impressions, I thrust out my hand to greet him, and into this he slipped cold, delicate fingers. Although slightly taken aback by how small his hand was, I pretended not to notice. Feigning cheerfulness, I smiled and plopped myself down on the bed.

Until now he had sat facing the wall to my right, ??????????? On it hung a panel covered with newspaper cuttings of the crime, with the center taken up by a large photo of the girl. Is this how he spent his days, I wondered, staring at this picture.

“They’re all about you, aren’t they?”

“Yes,” he replied in a voice so thin it reminded me of the whine of a mosquito.

“I’m collecting them”

“Stories about yourself?”

“That’s right. I’m interested in what they say…”

Again, I felt a certain surprise.

頭だけが大きく、その部分だけは、三十を過ぎた大人です。どこか人を寄せつけぬところがあります。そうしてまなざしは、何かおどおどしています。その印象をはねのける様に、私が勢いよく手を差し出すと、その中に、冷たい、ひ弱な指がすべりこんできました。その手の小ささに、私はいささかおどろきながら、しかし、無関心な風を装って、思い切り明るい笑顔をつくり、彼の腰かけていたベッドに，どんと座りました。

そうして今まで私の右手にあった壁に向かい合って、一瞬声をたてそうになりました。　そこには、事件の記事が、大きな彼女の写真を中心にして、パネルのまわりに、ぎっしりとはさみ込んであったのです。毎日これを眺めて過ごしているのでしょうか．．．．．．。

「あなたの記事ですね」

「ええ」小さな、文字通り蚊の鳴く様な声で、彼は答えて、

「集めているんですよ」

「御自分の記事を？」

「ええ。興味があるものですから．．．．．．」

私は、この妙な答えにふたたびおどろきながら、

「有名人ですからね、いまやあなたは」
